CHILD SAFEGUARDING
Level 2 – the responsibilities of the post will require the post holder to have regular contact with or access to children or young people.
ROLE PURPOSE
The position has been designed as an extension of the current technical work of the Maternal and Child Survival Project, managed by JHPIEGO. Save the Children is the Newborn technical specialist on the project and has seconded a Newborn Health Advisor to support implementation of all newborn components in Mara and Kagera regions where the project is operational. The Coordinator position will be field-based to ensure planning, implementation, monitoring and documentation of newborn health is done to quality standards for the MCSP program activities. The position will coordinate closely with the JHPIEGO teams in each region, serving as part of the field implementation.

Save the Children has been working in Tanzania for more than 30 years. We work with government, local organisations and other international agencies to reduce child malnutrition, improve newborn and maternal health, strengthen child protection systems, promote children's participation and contribution to policy and resource allocation for services which concern them, and respond to emergencies. It is currently starting a new strategic plan period (2016-2018), with approximately $8 million projected spend in 2016. The health and nutrition work at Save the Children in Tanzania is developed and quality is ensured through the Programme Development and Quality Team. Implementation of projects generally falls under the Director of Programme Implementation, but given the technical aspects of this project, it is managed by the Director of Programme Development and Quality.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY: Coordinate Implementation of MCSP Program Activities in Mara or Kagera region(s).
The roles and Responsibilities will include the following
  • Coordinate and ensure implementation all newborn health planned program activities as per work plan.
  • Participate in quarterly, monthly work planning and report writing
  • In collaboration with R/CHMTs, conduct continuous performance assessment of newborn health target interventions at target health facilities and work with health facility providers, administration to develop health facility action plans as relevant to the identified gaps, coordinate with, DMOs office and other relevant parties for the implementation and progress review of the identified action plans.
  • Use existing data and reports from Quality Improvement (QI) assessments to facilitate identification of performance gaps of facility and health workers and prepare mentorship plans as per the identified gaps.
  • Liaise and work closely with regional and district health management teams to emphasis on use of performance and quality improvement approaches in clinical sites and coordinate relevant resources from the district to support the process and ensure program efforts are complimentary to the regional newborn health improvement plans.
  • In collaboration with MCSP regional staff, R/CHMT, conduct trainings of health providers and mentorship on areas such as; essential newborn health care(ENC), Kangaroo Mother Care(KMC), Helping Babies Breathe(HBB), Postnatal Care(PNC) etc
  • Lead the monitoring and support supervision of Newborn health activities in the targeted districts
  • Support documentation of project activities in the region including lessons learnt, best practices and success stories
  • Participate in Regional/Council Newborn Health planning and progress meetings including regional data summits, Council Comprehensive Health plans(CCHPs) and other relevant meetings
  • Provide updates on newborn health emerging issues in the target region and districts
  • Coordinate and represent MCSP- Save the Children in the reginal and district professional circles and relevant meeting or conferences.
  • Contribute to the overall strategic implementation of MCSP program activities the region
  • Perform other tasks as assigned and identified by the Supervisor
