Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and supp ort girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.
We are non-governmental, non-religious and work with many local NGOs and community based organizations to implement our programs. We currently work in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zambia - countries with a desperate lack Of resources to educate their children. Since our inception, Room to Read's worldwide team has impacted over 7.8 million children by constructing more than 1,600 IZ schools, establishing over 15,000 libraries, publishing 874 new children's book titles in 27 local languages, and IN reaching over 20,000 girls through our Girls' Education program.
With funding from USAID, and i~ partnership with Research Triangle Institute (RTI), Room to Read is working with government to 'implement Heading-and Writing material development for Tusome Pamoja Project. The project is contributing to the national effort to improve learning outcomes by focusing investments in four regions of Tanzania Mainland (Ruvuma, Mtwara, Morogoro and Iringa) and all regions in Zanzibar, consisting of 34 districts; and reaching 1.4 million Tanzanian children in Standards (Stds)
Room to Read is providing technical assistance to the project to develop instructional and learning materials for reading and writing for standards 1- 4 to implement the 3Rs strategy for improving reading, writing, and arithmetic learning in early grades. It develops, design and publish Kiswahili teaching and learning materials for early grade reading and writing. The Tusome Pamoja continues the US Government's (USG's) support to the Government of Tanzania's (GOT's) efforts to implement this educational reform on a national scale. To ensure that project materials are of high quality and contextualized, we are looking for competent, self- driven, knowledgeable individuals to fill the Materials Development Specialist position, to drive mission of Tusome Pamoja Project.
Position: Graphic Designers
Length on contract-12 month
Primary Duties and responsibilities:
• Design and layout all materials developed by the Curriculum Developers (decodable and leveled texts for grades 1 and 2, student readers for grades 3 and 4, teacher's guides, and student writing journals).
• Design and layout the pre-primary teaching and learning materials for pre-primary students and teachers (RTI will provide the content)
• Design and layout the required arithmetic materials for the individual student kits (RTI will provide the content);
• Design and layout accompanying teachers' guides for arithmetic (RTI will provide the content)
• Complete timesheets and submit them to supervisor every month correctly and on time.
• Participate in all required Tusome Pamoja meetings, workshops, and reviews.
• Experience, Skills and Education Needed:
• Preferably a diploma or graphic designing certificate.
• 3+ years' experience of graphic designing, including the provision of example works previously worked upon
• Experience, with graphic designing works in early graders books, will be an advantage.
• Must be computer literate with demonstrable abilities of Microsoft Office, Highly skilled in designing software

Perform editorial duties that include reading, reviewing, and revising and rewriting manuscripts or books prepared by writers, edit contents, correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation check for consistency and logic.

• Meet frequently with writers, illustrators, designers and Material development specialist to discuss projects and resolve problems.
• Maintain a good relationship with writers and exercise tact and diplomacy when criticizing a manuscript
• Work closely with writers, illustrators and graphic designers so to ensure that the work being to be produced has high literary merit and is free from inconsistencies, including grammatical and spelling errors.
• Work with large variety of book types, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, textbooks, Learners guide and story books and be able to make professional judgments about different kinds of books for different audiences.
• In addition to having writing and interpersonal abilities, you must also be highly organized and details- oriented.
• Experience, Skills and Education Needed:
• Must have at least a bachelor's degree in Language preferably English and Kiswahili; Journalism, Communications, Education. .
• 3+ years' experience of editing/proof-reading materials for publication, including the provision of example works previously worked upon
• Experience, with editorial works, working with publishing houses or work in other media such as newspaper or magazine editing will be an advantage.
• Experience working with private and government institutions in preparation for material publishing
• Must be computer literate with demonstrable abilities of Microsoft Office, ideally knowledge of publishing software
• You must have a particular interest in the technical aspects of writing, such as grammar, punctuation and sentence structure.
• The preferred candidate will ideally have experience working with materials for adult education and formal education, student materials
