Established in 1915 with Helen Keller as a founding trustee, Helen Keller International (HKI) works to save the sight and lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. Headquartered in New York City, HKI currently conducts programs in 21 countries in Africa and Asia as well as in the United States. HKI is known for sustainability, reliability, efficiency and the highest level of technical expertise in fighting and treating blindness and malnutrition. To accomplish its work, HKI builds the capacity of local governmental, civil society and private sector systems and infrastructure, and promotes the development of sustained, large-scale programs that deliver effective preventative and curative services for nutrition, eye health and neglected tropical diseases.

Country Overview:

Established in 1984, the HKI-Tanzania office was the organization's first in Africa set up to provide primary eye care services in central Tanzania. HKI has since expanded its role and currently works in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MoH), local NGO’s, and other national and international development partners in the areas of nutrition and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), particularly trachoma.

Scope of the Position:

HKI-Tanzania is a new Implementing Partner in the Trachoma SAFE Program through ICTC (International Coalition for Trachoma Control) with Sightsavers UK as Grant Manager. Through this program we will be supporting surgeries for trachomatous trichiasis (TT) in up to seven districts in southwestern Tanzania.

HKI-Tanzania is seeking a Driver who will be based in Sumbawanga to support the team that will be doing planning and implementation of TT surgical camps in that area.

Department: SAFE Surgical - NTD Programs

Duty Station: Sumbawanga

Reports to: Finance and Admin Officer

Direct reports: None

Duration: 12 months

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

Logistics Support

- Drives HKI staff and officials to meetings, field missions and ports of entry and exit.

- Collects and delivers mail, packages and equipment; and maintains records of all deliveries and distributions.

- Obtains security clearance for field missions where necessary.

- Performs airport pick-up duties. Vehicle Maintenance

- Ensures that the assigned vehicle is compliant with the HKI’s minimum operating standards and Vehicle Policy requirements.

- Reports need for minor repairs and regular maintenance to Administrative Assistant and ensures that the vehicle is kept clean and in good running condition at all times.

- Ensures safety and custody of the vehicle, including tools.

- Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, registration, logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts are in the assigned vehicle.

- Ensures that, in the event of an accident involving the office vehicle, the necessary steps required by rules and regulations are followed. Administrative Support

- Maintains records for vehicles, logs official trips, records daily mileage, records the use of fuel vouchers, and keeps records on consumption.

- Keeps track of insurance and other tax formalities

- Assist office staff in filing, photocopying and maintaining stores when required. Assists in the mailing and distribution of newsletters and publications and arranges to pay office telephone and other bills, as required.

- The driver is responsible for running many of the daily chores of the office or of the respective official.

- The driver is responsible for ensuring the safety of the automobile he/ she has been assigned for example ensuring that the vehicle is parked properly to avoid any towing and follow road laws

- The driver is responsible for filing the records mentioning the time when he took the vehicle, where he took the vehicle and when was it returned to the Office

People Management & Leadership:

- Ensures that all required driving training is successfully completed and certifications are kept up to date.

- Exchanges relevant information and maintains an open line of communication with colleagues and his/her supervisor.

- When necessary, translates in local language for the head of office and/or official personnel when using the car.

- Actively participates in CO and operations unit meetings.

Academic Requirements:

- Minimum of secondary school leaving certificate.

- Valid driver’s license.

- Defensive driving certificate.

Experience:

- 3 years’ work experience as a driver in an international organization, embassy or UN system with a safe driving record.

- Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, chauffeur protocol and courtesies

- Conversant with the road network and traffic regulations of Tanzania.

- Skills in minor vehicle repairs

- Fluency in oral and written English.
