About TWESA
TWESA is a Tanzanian NGO that was formed in 1997 to relieve suffering of disaster victims in emergencies and of poor communities in needy areas, through development and implementation of improved and protected water supply, environmental sanitation and hygiene.
TWESA implements water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services and facilities in the Kigoma region of Tanzania, including in the Nyarugusu, Nduta, Mtendeli, NMC refugee camps and Way stations.

Position Details
The Gender and Protection Officer is responsible for providing technical training and assistance on gender and protection prevention and response within TWESA’s field locations. This position will involve developing and monitoring projects in the field, as well as conducting gender mainstreaming in the organization.
This position is based in Kasulu, with frequent travel throughout North-West Tanzania.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Train national and incentive staffs in tools for effective gender mainstreaming, protection, and their responsibilities in PSEA (Protection from sexual abuse and exploitation)
- Train frontline staff in recognizing and responding to gender concerns and protection issues, including those relating to children, people with specific needs, and other vulnerable populations.
- Provide staff with technical expertise and assistance in program design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of projects to ensure protection and gender concerns are addressed
- Support the mainstreaming of gender and protection issues in all projects to ensure best practices and standards are met in each sector, with particular focus on Shelter and WASH
- Support gender mainstreaming within the organization’s internal operations and policies, including drafting and revising policies to ensure gender and protection standards are met
- Conduct continuous monitoring and assessment of activities to ensure that national and international standards and best practices in gender and protection are being met
- Establish and maintain effective reporting, monitoring, and evaluation criteria and mechanisms to ensure that sex-disaggregated data, gender indicators gender analyses, and protection analyses are captured for each sector
- Prepare monthly reports on all activities, trainings, and monitoring and evaluation conducted relating to gender and protection
- Participate in working groups, coordination meetings, trainings, and any other relevant meetings relating to gender and protection
- Pursue and develop meaningful partnerships with other national and international organizations working in gender programming and protection issues .
- Support gender mainstreaming within the organization’s internal operations and policies, including drafting and revising policies to ensure gender and protection standards and TWESA Strategic Plan objectives are met.'
Academic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (international development, human rights, gender, etc.)
- Masters degree preferred.
- Some education or training in gender and/or international human rights
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years experience working in a humanitarian setting or working with vulnerable populations in gender, human rights, or similar field
- Significant experience working with gender issues, in a professional or voluntary capacity
- Strong knowledge of international humanitarian standards, codes, and principles relating to gender, GBV, and human rights
- Demonstrated skills in conducting trainings, project implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and report writing
- Computer skills, including strong proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Ability to be a problem solver, finding solutions to challenging problems quickly
- Experience working in an intercultural environment
- Ability to maintain a regular presence at field locations, work irregular hours, and travel at short notice
- Fluency in English, with excellent written and oral skills
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with refugees, particularly women, children, and people with specific needs
- Experience working with international NGOs or the UN System
- Experience developing and implementing programs
