RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Role Summary:
The position of ‘Research Assistant’ at Pamoja Tunaweza Women's Centre is a dynamic role which will require you to utilise numerous skills such as translation, transcribing, and conducting qualitative interviews. This position is advertised as part-time, but may increase to full-time. This position will require experience in working in both English and Swahili, translating during interviews for English-speaking researchers, establishing contact and rapport with Tanzanian research participants, transcribing voice recordings and other duties. You will be expected to participate fully in the research team and complete other tasks as assigned.
Location: Rau, Moshi, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
Time Commitment: Minimum 2 – 3 days per week
Key Responsibilities:
- Translation of English documents to Swahili
- Establishing contact with Tanzanian research participants
- Acting as a translator for English-speaking researcher during Swahili interviews
- Transcribing voice recordings of interviews into English written documents
- Supporting the project team
Required Qualifications & Experiences:
- Previous experience translating and/or transcribing documents between English and Swahili
- Familiarity working in cross-cultural settings
- The ability to be flexible and adaptable to the situation
- Ability to solve unexpected problems as they arise
Competencies:
Required
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong planning and organization skills
- Fluent in English
- Fluent in Swahili
Desirable:
- Basic computer skills
- College or university degree
